OBJECTIVES AND PURPOSE OF THE COURSE

The second level Master’s Course in Anaesthesiology and Cardiothoracic & Vascular Intensive Care intends to provide participants with appropriate, up-to-date theoretical and practical training in the medical care of critical patients suffering from cardiorespiratory system disorders, enabling them to manage patients of this kind in the light of the latest developments in knowledge and technology. Participants will gain experience of both the anaesthesiological treatment of patients undergoing conventional cardiosurgery procedures and the latest percutaneous transcatheter structural cardiology, electrophysiology and endovascular therapies. In the area of intensive care, there will be a special focus on short and long term extracorporeal life support systems.

FINAL EXAM
Formulation, design and drafting of an Anaesthesiology and Cardiothoracic & Vascular Intensive Care protocol, with the preparation of a experimental/clinical final dissertation:
Each participant will be set an independent research project which evaluates the application of new therapies or devices for critical cardiopulmonary disease patients. Participants are expected to check the completeness and quality of the acquired data and use specific analysis methods and appropriate statistical methods. Each participant will be provided with a tutor to give support in the exporting of data and the preparation of the final text. It is expected that the end product will be an original paper for submission to peer-reviewed journals.
On completion of the dissertation, the student will be assigned 10,12 ECTS-credits.

This programme requires full-time attendance five days a week, with shadowing of a permanent staff member for night-time and holiday on-call availability for emergencies. Each participant in the Master’s Degree course shall be assigned a tutor, who will ensure that their clinical skills progress satisfactorily and will report any problems to the co-ordinators and the consultant in charge of the unit.
Training will take place on a rotational basis as follows: one month in the operating theatre, one month in the interventional cardiology laboratories and one month in the Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care unit.

Assessment of qualification
Maximum score: 20 points divided as follows:

Educational Curriculum vitae (Degree mark): max 8 points
Professional Curriculum vitae (previous hospital experience, relevant scientific publications, any other qualifications): max 10 points
Specialisation, where applicable, in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care: 2 points

Oral examinations will be conducted if the number of applications is greater than the number of places available: max 10 points.

In principle, in the event that too many deserving candidates apply, the organisers will attempt to schedule the Course in a way that enables them all to take part.
