The Professional Postgraduate Master’s Degree Course in Digestive Physiopathology – level 2 (Italian system) at Università Vita Salute S. Raffaele offers participants effective and up-to-date theoretical and practical preparation in the field of Digestive Physiopathology.

The course uses an experimental dissertation and practical tests to verify that the student has:
a) Acquired the required theoretical knowledge on oesophageal motility, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and anorectal motility.
b) Acquired the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge on techniques for assessing oesophageal motility (standard and high-resolution stationary oesophageal manometry) and gastro-oesophageal reflux (24-hour impedance analysis and pH analysis)
c) Acquired the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge of techniques for assessing the functionality of the anorectal area (anorectal manometry and re-education of the pelvic floor via bio-feedback).
d) Acquired the necessary clinical management skills for patients with oesophageal achalasia, GERD, and functional anorectal disorders.
e) Acquired the necessary clinical management skills for patients with other functional disorders of the upper and lower digestive tracts.
f) Acquired the theoretical foundations of techniques (endoscopic and surgical) for treating GERD and achalasia.
g) Acquired the theoretical foundations of pelvic floor re-education techniques.

Course Aims
The course aims to teach digestive physiopathology, in particular techniques for studying oesophageal motility, performing instrumentational evaluation of GERD and functional assessment of the anorectal region.
The course aims to teach students how to correctly perform and interpret oesophageal and anorectal manometry procedures, as well as 24-hour impedance analysis and pH monitoring procedures.
The course therefore aims to provide participants with sufficient knowledge on the equipment and techniques of digestive physiopathology, as well as the ability to assess the indications of the different examinations, their advantages and limitations.
The most recent endoscopic procedures for treating GERD will also be demonstrated.
There will also be a strong focus on practical activities.

The course consists of 3 month-long periods of mandatory attendance at the university, over the course of an academic year, with dates to be defined on an annual basis, including all learning activities with mandatory attendance.

The month’s attendance in the department will be followed by a three-monthly period of home activities in which the participants will further their preparation via Web-based distance learning and personal study.
