Bio

Nato a Bergamo nel 1962, si è laureato in Medicina e Chirurgia presso l’Università di Pavia nel 1987 dove si è specializzato in Neurologia nel 1991. Dal 1990 al 1992 ha svolto attività di ricerca all’estero presso il Dipartimento di Neurologia del Karolinska Institute di Stoccolma e presso il Dipartimento di Neurologia dell’Università di Chicago. Dal 1997 al 2008 ha diretto l’Unità di Neuroimmunologia e dal 2008 dirige la Divisione di Neuroscienze dell’Istituto Scientifico San Raffaele di Milano. E’ professore ordinario di biologia applicata presso l’Università Vita-Salute di Milano e honorary professor presso la School of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary University of London. E’ stato tra i fondatori dell’Associazione Italiana di Neuroimmunologia (AINI), di cui è stato Presidente dal 2009 al 2012, e dell’European School of Neuroimmunology (ESNI) e della Global Schools of Neuroimmunology (GSNI) delle quali è tutt’ora il coordinatore scientifico. Dal 2010 al 2012 è stato Vice Presidente e dal 2012 al 2014 è stato Presidente dell’International Society of Neuroimmunology (ISNI). E’ membro del consiglio scientifico di numerose società scientifiche nazionali ed internazionali ed ha conseguito negli anni numerosi premi scientifici tra i quali il Premio Rita Levi-Montalcini. E’ autore di oltre 250 pubblicazioni scientifiche. I suoi interessi scientifici vanno dallo studio dei meccanismi patogenetici alla base dei disturbi del sistema nervoso centrale di tipo immunomediato allo sviluppo di strumenti di terapia genica e di innovative terapie utilizzanti cellule staminali neurali per il trattamento di questi disturbi.

Gianvito Martino, MD

 

Gianvito Martino received his Medical Degree in 1987 from the University of Pavia (Italy) where he completed his residency in Neurology in 1991. In 1990, he was a Visiting Scientist at the Department of Neurology of the Karolinska Institute (Stockholm, Sweden) and, from 1991 to 1992, he held the position of Research Associate at the Department of Neurology of the University of Chicago (Chicago, IL, USA). From 1992 to 2008, he worked first as Senior Scientist and then as Director of the Neuroimmunology Unit of the San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Milan (Italy) where, from 2008, he acts as Director of the Division of Neuroscience. He is full professor of biology at the University Vita-Salute San Raffaele in Milan (Italy) and honorary professor at the School of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary University of London (UK). From 2009 to 2012, he served as President of the Italian Neuroimmunology Society (AINI). From 2010 to 2012 he was appointed Vice President and from 2012 to 2014 President of the International Society of Neuroimmunology (ISNI). In 2000, he founded The European School of Neuroimmunology (ESNI) and in 2012 The Global Schools of Neuroimmunology (GSNI), since then, he has been acting as scientific coordinator of the schools. He serves as member of the scientific committee of several national and international scientific societies and received over the years numerous scientific awards including the Rita Levi-Montalcini Award. He is co-author of more than 250 original articles and book chapters. His scientific interests range from the elucidation of the pathogenic mechanisms of immune-mediated central nervous system disorders to the development of gene and stem cell-based therapies for the treatment of these disorders.
