The San Raffaele International Postdoctoral Programme was launched for the development and the support of a growing postdoctoral comunity.
The San Raffaele International Postdoctoral Programme is active within Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele (UniSR) and Ospedale San Raffaele (OSR) that are part of one of the largest biomedical science parks in Europe renowned as a leading research structure in the field of Molecular Medicine in Italy and worldwide. The integration between excellence in teaching, innovation in research and optimal patient care is the mission of the San Raffaele biomedical campus.
UniSR comprises the Faculties of Psychology, Medicine and Philosophy offering a wide range of Degree courses, including both national and international MD Programmes. Within the campus, UniSR forms an integral part with OSR research institutes and hospital, providing many opportunities to students, teachers, researchers and doctors.
Being enrolled in the Programme offers a unique chance to be trained in cutting-edge research topics and state-of-the art techniques in a highly supportive, intensely collaborative and interdisciplinary environment, exposing fellows to both academic and corporate settlements.
Current fields of research on campus are Molecular Oncology, Neuroscience, Genetics and Cell Biology, Immunology, Transplantation and Infectious Diseases, Metabolic and Cardiovascular Sciences, Regenerative Medicine Stem Cells and Gene Therapy, Translational Genomics and Bioinformatics and Experimental Imaging.
In line with the commitment to a life-long training of the future generation of scientists and science-related professionals, the programme offers postdocs not only to gain new research skills, but also to be exposed to scientific writing, communication, report preparation, grant writing, patent applications and project management.
Last but not least, the city of Milan offers an active, cultural and international environment, conveniently located near some of the most important Italian historical sites, including Venice and Florence, and within a two-hour drive from the Mediterranean coasts and the Alps.
INternational VEnue for PoSTgraduate Education
The San Raffaele Scientific Institute (SRSI) is a leading research structure in the field of Molecular Medicine in Italy and worldwide. Three major Institutions operate within SRSI today: Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele (USR), the Beneficiary of the INVEST programme, Ospedale San Raffaele (OSR), a major private Research Hospital, and Fondazione Centro San Raffaele (FCSR), a private non-profit Research Foundation. The mission of the SRSI is therefore integration and interdisciplinarity for excellence in teaching, innovation in research, and optimal patient’s care.
San Raffaele SRSI hosts an International Postdoctoral Programme (IPP) devoted to the development and support of an international postdoctoral community through the recruitment of both national and non-national fellows according to excellence standards. Through IPP International Venue for Postgraduate Education (INVEST) project, USR is committed to further develop such programme. Given its position within SRSI, USR offers INVEST postdocs the opportunity to be trained in cutting-edge research topics in a highly supportive, intensely collaborative and interdisciplinary environment.
The INVEST project has started in November 2011, involving:
- three Calls for Applications
- the enrolment of up to 20 postdocs
- both incoming and reintegration schemes
- funding (including fellowship and research costs) for 24 months
The INVEST project aims at:
- increasing the international aspect of the postdoctoral community
- favouring transnational mobility
- fostering state-of-the art research activity
- providing training and career development opportunities
Postdoctoral fellows were recruited through merit-based transparent selection procedures and had the chance to freely choose the research topic of interest among those present within the Scientific Institute. Teaching activities are carried out in three University Faculties (Medicine, Philosophy and Psychology), whereas research activities spanning the field of Molecular Medicine are carried out in 5 Research Divisions and 3 specialized Research Centres. Moreover, 4 largely independent but integrated Research Institutes are present on Campus.
Description of work and main results
Three international calls for applications were launched in 2011, 2013, and 2014. Three independent Selection Committees performed the selection of potential candidates. 21 fellowships were awarded overall and 17 have been assigned. At the end of the fourth reporting period, 11 postdocs are active in the project. All the fellows were given a welcome booklet to support them with administrative procedures, legal issues, and information on local facilities and activities.
INTERNATIONAL POSTDOCTORAL PROGRAMME
The San Raffaele International Postdoctoral Programme 2016 Call had offered 2 positions (a two-years assegno di ricerca – in compliance with Law 240/2012, art. 22) for the duration of 24 months.
The research activity was held within San Raffaele Scientific Institute/Ospedale San Raffaele (OSR) and Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele (UniSR) that are part of one of the largest biomedical science parks in Europe renowned as a leading research structure in the field of Molecular Medicine in Italy and worldwide. The integration between excellence in teaching, innovation in research and optimal patient care is the mission of the San Raffaele biomedical campus.
On May 24th 2016, the Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele in the framework of the International Postdoctoral Programme launched a competitive call for the assignment of 2 fellowships (a two-years assegno di ricerca – in compliance with Law 240/2012, art. 22) for the duration of 24 months.
We received 20 applications with all eligibility criteria.
The selection was performed by the evaluating committee, composed by the IPPC members
The first phase of selection was based on candidate’s qualification such as: a) education; b) scientific publications; c) research experience; d) reference letters; e) research interests; f) awards. The first phase selection resulted in the invitation of the top 8 applicants to the second stage where nominees were asked to submit a research project and to give a public seminar.
All candidates accessing to the second selection phase were evaluated according to: a) originality of the project; b) feasibility of the project, c) relevance of the project; d) clarity, design and organisation of the project. At the end of a very competitive procedure, the Evaluating Committee decided to award the 2 available positions to the best candidates.
The information provided above is currently valid for the 2013 and 2014 COFUND programme through the INVEST project.
