Curriculum vitae

        Born in Pavia (Italy) 2.4.1952. Academic studies: University of Pisa, Scuola Normale Superiore (Pisa), Munich, Zürich, Oxford (Wolfson College).

        1976 Laurea (First University Degree) in Philosophy, with a Thesis on Foundations of Mathematics in Husserl's early Work. (University of Pisa).

        1976 Diplome of the Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa.

        1981 D.Phil thesis Dottrine dell'intelligenza - Saggio su Frege e Wittgenstein, submitted and discussed at the Scuola Normale Superiore. Judging Board: Professor Michael Dummett, Professor N. Badaloni.

        1981-82 Appointed as Assistant Professor («Ricercatore confermato» at the Scuola Normale Superiore.

        1982 –88 Assistant Professor at the State University of Milan, Department of Philosophy.

        1982-87 Several research-stays at the University of Oxford, Wolfson College, and at  other Universities or Research Institutes in Europe (University of Graz, Austria, Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbuettel, Germany, University of Toulouse, France).

        1989-2004 Full Professor (Professeur ordinaire) of Modern and Contemporary Philosophy at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. 1990-94 Chair of the Department.

 

Present position

        Full Professor of Philosophy of Person at the new Faculty of Philosophy – Università Vita Salute San Raffaele – Milano, Italy.

 

Domains of research

        Phenomenology, Philosophy of Person and Mind, Ethics, Esthetics, History of Philosophy. Teaching Languages: Italian, French, English, German.

 

Teaching activities

    Undergraduate teaching:

1° level: Philosophy of Person I (Elements of General Phenomenology; Elements of Theories of Person and History of the Problem);

2° level Philosophy of Person II (Individuality, Elements of its Ontology; Personal Identity).

    Graduate teaching:

Mind and Person: contemporary issues.

(A study on the notion of a thought in Frege and early Wittgenstein (Tractatus). Main question: what is the difference between a (Fregean) language theory denying and one (Wittgensteinian) mantaining that there can be also musical and pictorial, as well as conceptual, thoughts?)

(In the form of a dialogue with C. Michelstaedter, an outstanding italian philosopher who committed suicide in 1910 after writing his main work, La persuasione e la rettorica. A meditation on the forms of "rhetoric" as forms of "non-authentic life", according to the platonic tradition of criticism. A research on the platonistic attitude toward rhetoric as opposed to philosophy, based on a free exegesis of the main texts of the concerned tradition: from Plato through Christian Neo-platonism to the Modern Age).
