The Faculty of Philosophy

Philosophy as concrete thought

The Faculty of Philosophy at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University was created to answer the question “quid est homo?” (what is man?) or, in other words, to investigate the human being in his various dimensions of corpus, mens and spiritus.

The project of this degree course aims, therefore, to restore to philosophy its concreteness and pertinence within the context of the important problems we are facing today.

In this sense, the differences between the two cultures, scientific-technical on the one hand and humanistic-philosophical on the other, lose significance. Scientific research and technical activity are expressions of a culture, a way of thinking, which needs to be constantly reformulated, developed and discussed. Furthermore, as these activities are intrinsically social, and are becoming more unstable every day due to the effect of globalisation, any philosophical reflection  will be essentially political, in the Aristotelian sense of the search for good living.

Characteristics of the course

The Degree Course in Philosophy (Degree Classes in Philosophy) revolves around four main areas:

·      technical and artistic production (philosophy of technique, aesthetics, economy);

·      scientific research into nature, man and language (search for truth, “knowing oneself” and the investigation into the nature of the mind and cognitive functions);

·      moral and political activity (the research into the relationship between law and justice, individual and community well-being);

·      interrogation of the fundamentals of thought and reality (logic, metaphysics and theology).

Each area will be investigated through dialogue and discussion between teachers, researchers and students on the one hand and experts from the world of science, politics, art, industry and economy on the other. This dialogue will find its concrete application in periods training in working areas of production and culture during the final phase of the course.

Teaching will be based on modules, seminars, tests, courses and training periods linked directly to future professional opportunities. In particular, there will be studies in information technology and in the writing of philosophical texts both in Italian and in English.

The course will be organised so as to favour reflection. As well as seminars and objective methods, new technology will be used to collect and divulge information and create a link between students, researchers, teachers and members of other institutions, in particular other European and American universities.

Training objectives

The graduates of this degree course will be able to analyse and discuss the main philosophical, ethical, political and social questions of contemporary society. They will also possess the ability to carry out research on and produce valid scientific texts in both Italian and at least one other European language.
