PhD program in Cognitive Neuroscience
The application to the International PhD Course in Cognitive Neuroscience can be submitted, regardless of age or citizenship, by those holding a 5-year University Degree, a Master Degree or an equivalent foreign academic qualification, approved by the PhD Examination Committee, also according to international agreements and/or inter-university cooperation and mobility agreements.
Final year students can apply to the PhD course, only if they will graduate before October 31st, 2019.
The application to the PhD Course in Cognitive Neuroscience for the a.y. 2019/2020 are open
Registration ad application for the competition must be submitted within 1:00 pm of August 23rd, 2019.
The Referees must upload the reference letter on the website (according with the procedures indicated in the Call for Applications) within August 25th, 2019.
The evaluation of the qualifications, which is not public and does not require the presence of candidates.
The Commission will be carried out the evaluation approximately on September 17th and following the ranking of the candidates admitted to the interviews will be published.
The interviews will be held September 25th.
The information below is an excerpt, for information only, of what is reported in the Call for Applications which represents, in the Italian version, the only legal communication of the related contents and therefore, in the event of a dispute, will only be valid the text of the Call in Italian.
The following 5 positions will be assigned through the present Call:
1 position without fellowship
To be admitted to the selection, Italian citizens, EU and non-EU citizens must pay € 50,00 fee following the instructions indicated on the online registration form.
Please note that payment of the fee by itself does not imply that the candidate has registered correctly to the selection unless all the steps indicated in the form have been fulfilled. The fee will NOT be reimbursed for whatever reason the candidate does not participated to the admission selection.
Registration and application must be filed exclusively online, through the University website (http://intranet.unisr.it/esse3/Home.do).
Registration for the selection consists in four steps:
- Registration and filing personal data - “Guide for the registration“;
- Login to the website, through the appropriate link (https://intranet.unisr.it/esse3/Home.do)
- Online payment of the fee for the chosen competition – “Guide for Application”
- Filling out the application form and uploading the required documentation.
Upon submitting the application, the candidate will receive a confirmation email.
In the application, Candidates will provide all information required in the online form.
The application (electronic form) can be filled out either in Italian or English.
In the application, Candidate will also indicate up to two referees that, when the candidate will closed the application, will receive an automatic email having attached the form for the reference letter and the link to upload the letter
Candidates are responsible for the data submitted; they can contact the referee(s) to request the letter and to check that it is submitted as required by this call within the defined deadline. The PhD Office will not solicit the submission of the letters.
After submitting the online application, the Candidate shall enclose in the same online registration system the following documentation in a separated PDF files:
- Application Form, duly signed;
- A self-certification of the Bachelor’s Degree, indicating the graduation mark;
- A self-certification of the Master’s Degree, indicating the graduation mark (both according to the old and new Italian regulations);
- If applicable, a self-certification duly filled out (Attachment 2) where the Candidates must declare that master degree thesis sent via email (please indicate also the title of thesis) is comply with the original. AN ELECTRONIC COPY OF THE THESIS MUST BE SENT VIA EMAIL, ONLY IN ELECTRONIC FORMAT (.pdf file), TO email@example.com AND MUST NOT BE ENCLOSED IN THE ONLINE REGISTRATION SYSTEM. Hard copies of the Thesis will not be accepted;
- A copy of a valid identification document;
- ONLY for candidates who have not yet graduated when submitting the online application, the list of all exams taken including the relative marks and the WEIGHTED AVERAGE of all grades;
Moreover, Candidates with a foreign academic qualification, which has not yet received a declaration of equivalence to an Italian degree, will submit with the application any document that may be useful for the Examination Committee to declare its equivalence, as set forth by article 2 of the Call for Applications.
REFERENCE LETTERS – Allegato 1
All reference letters, which have not been drafted according to the form or submitted in different ways than those described in the Call for Applications will be rejected.
SOBSTITUTE DECLARATION – Allegato 2
The entitled persons shall avail themselves of what is set forth in Italian Presidential Decree no. 445/00, as amended and integrated, governing substitute declarations, by using this form, in case they attest other circumstances provided for by Articles 46 and 47 of Italian Presidential Decree no. 445/00.
Admission to the PhD Course takes place after passing a two-stage comparative evaluation procedure, as defined in the Call for Applications.
For the purposes of the final ranking up to 60 points can be attributed to the Candidates’ qualifications (including the written project) and references (first assessment phase), and up to 40 points can be attributed during the second assessment phase.
This phase is not public, it is carried out by the Commission and does not require the presence of the Candidates and it concerns di evaluation of:
- The qualifications filed from the Candidates in the online form;
- The written dissertation describing the Candidates’ research interests;
- The reference letters, directly submitted to the PhD Office by referee/s listed by the Candidates in the application form.
Based on the documents received, the Commission will proceed to the first evaluation phase, comparative assessment of the Candidates’ qualifications and will rank the candidates admitted to the second phase.
Only Candidates, who have obtained a score greater than or equal to 50% of the maximum score attributable for the first evaluation (60 points), will be admitted to the second phase.
This phase consists of an interview with the Examination Committee aimed to assess the scientific competences and aptitudes of the Students. The assessment criteria used shall be those already established by the Commission.
Candidates, if unable to take the interview at UniSR, can ask the Commission to do it via Skype.
Upon assessment of the request, the Commission can authorize or deny the interview via Skype.
For the interview, the Candidates will have to show a identification document (the types of documents accepted are listed in the Call for Applications).
The interview will consider:
- the general and specific qualifications of the Candidates;
- the knowledge of English;
- the discussion of any publication;
- the motivation for pursue the PhD Course and further professional research path.
At the end of the second assessment phase, the Examination Committee will fill in a final ranking based on a comparative assessment of the candidates.
Candidates with a final score lower than 60% of the total attributable score (100 points) will be considered non-eligible.
The assignment of fellowships, takes into account the position in the final ranking.
There will be only one final ranking, which will be updated after each withdrawal.
First, the 4 fellowships will be assigned.
Once all the positions with fellowships are assigned, an updated ranking list according to the withdrawals will be published. At that point, the position without fellowship is assigned.
The Candidates awarded with a fellowship will have to proceed to formalize the enrollment through the dedicated webpage, using the login credentials received at the time of the online Registration (http://intranet.unisr.it/esse3/Home.do) within two days from the publication of the ranking. The Candidates awarded with a position without a fellowship will have five days to comply.
All Candidates WILL HAVE TO COMPLETE the enrollment procedure within the second working day of the online enrollment.
Candidates who fail to proceed to the online enrollment, or do not complete the enrollment, in due time will be deemed renouncers and will lose their right to enroll.
The ranking is updated according to the assignments, any withdrawal that may occur in each phase, always taking into account the preferences expressed by the candidates; appropriate communication will be given on the website.
Moreover the candidates that will have to proceed with the registration at that phase will receive, for information purposes only, a specific communication via e-mail, to the e-mail address indicated during the submission of the application.
Failure to receive this email message will not be considered as an objection for the missed enrollment to the PhD.
