Research Activity

 

Dr. Salsone started working in the Department of Neurology-Movement Disorders Lab of the “Magna Graecia” University in 2007, developing a specific expertise in performing clinical and neuroimaging experimental protocols in patients with Neurodegenerative Disorders, in particular Parkinson's Disease, Atypical Parkinsonism and Dementias. In this period, she focused her research activity on the use of nuclear medicine imaging techniques (DAT-Scan and cardiac MIBG scintigraphy) to assist the differential diagnosis, especially in the early stage of the disease. Since 2013, when she started working in the CNR, she employed all the most advanced structural (volumetric, voxel based morphometry, cortical thickness, diffusion tensor imaging, T2*-relaxometry, protonic spectroscopy) and functional (task-based and resting state) MRI approaches to the study of the brain abnormalities and pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the clinical manifestations in patients with neurodegenerative disorders. The combination of clinical experience and neuroimaging research is the foundation of Dr. Salsone’s research activity with the aim to translate innovative methodologies into clinical practice. Her current activity is mainly focused on the development biomedical devices based on the identification of predictive biomarkers of neurodegeneration thus allowing an early and timely diagnosis. Actually she cooperates with the Department of Clinical Neurosciences, Neurology-Sleep Disorder Center of IRCCS San Raffaele Scientific Institute and Faculty of Psychology of “Vita-Salute” San Raffaele University, thus expanding her research to neurophysiological and neuropsychological studies on Obstructive Sleep Apnea and REM sleep behaviour disorder, for decoding the causal link between sleep disorders and neurodegeneration.
