Biography
Biography
Marta Bosia is Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University and Consultant Psychiatrist at IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, Italy.
She obtained her MD and completed her residency in Psychiatry at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, where she has been involved in teaching activities since 2009, alongside her clinical and research work. After earning a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience and Philosophy of Mind in 2015, she developed an interdisciplinary research programme integrating psychiatry, cognitive neuroscience, linguistics, and rehabilitation sciences.
Her research focuses on severe mental disorders and on strategies aimed at reducing their impact on people's lives, promoting a psychiatry centred on functioning, social participation, and quality of life. Within this framework, she supports the active involvement of people with lived experience of mental illness (lived experts) in research activities and the co-design of interventions and services, with the goal of developing solutions that are more responsive to patients’ needs.
Among the first researchers in Italy to promote a systematic approach to the study of language in schizophrenia, she has contributed to the development of assessment tools for pragmatic abilities and rehabilitative interventions targeting communication and social cognition, including the APACS-Brief test and the PragmaCom programme.
More recently, her research has expanded to emerging areas in mental health, including the evaluation of the therapeutic potential of psychedelics for selected forms of schizophrenia, the impact of climate change on mental health, and inequalities in access to care and clinical outcomes.
She is the author of more than 150 international scientific publications, book chapters, and educational contributions for mental health professionals and students. She leads and collaborates on national and international research projects focused on therapeutic innovation, global mental health, and reducing the burden associated with psychiatric disorders, including DIALOG (Understanding Disorganisation: A Language-focused Global Initiative in Psychosis), an international initiative supported by the Wellcome Trust and dedicated to advancing research on language and communication in psychosis.
Alongside her clinical and research activities, she holds institutional roles, serving as Chair of the Tutoring Subcommittee of the School of Medicine and Surgery, member of the Academic Committee of the International MD Program, and Faculty Representative for Diversity and Inclusion, contributing to initiatives aimed at supporting students and promoting inclusive educational pathways.
