EDUCATION AND TRAINING

March 2010: PhD dissertation, University of Leiden, The Netherlands, Thesis: “Human mesenchymal stem cells: biological characterization and clinical application” under the supervision of Prof. W.E. Fibbe.

October 30, 2005: Residency in Pediatrics, University of Pavia, Thesis: “Study of the    chondrogenic potential of mesenchymal stem cells isolated from different tissue sources”; final grade 50/50 with honours.

April 2001: Licensed to practice Medicine and Surgery.

July 20, 2000: Medical Degree in Medicine and Surgery, University of Pavia, Thesis:  “Immunological Reconstitution after placental stem cell transplantation”; final grade110/110 with honours

June 2004 - June 2005: fellowship at the Department of Experimental Haematology Leiden University Medical Centre, under the supervision of Prof. W.E. Fibbe, focusing on research projects in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation utilizing mesenchymal stromal cells as therapeutic support in pediatric allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Investigator in several national and international clinical trials in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in pediatric patients.

Investigator in clinical trials in ex-vivo hematopoietic stem cell gene therapy in pediatric patients affected by ADA-SCID, WAS, MLD, Beta-Thalassemia

Fondazione Telethon, SR-Tiget Core Grant (2016-2021). Principal Investigator of the project E6 “Use of mesenchimal stromal cells to optimize transplantation outcome of gene edited hematopoietic stem cells”.

Recipient of an investigator grant (IG9062) from Associazione Italiana Ricerca sul Cancro (AIRC) in 2009, entitled Role of human mesenchymal stem cells in tumor angiogenesis”.

Recipient of a grant from Ministero della Salute, Bando Giovani Ricercatori 2008 entitled “Mesenchymal stem cells and cancer: toward safer cell-based therapeutic application”.

Collaborator in national and international research project, including a European Union 6th Framework Program project (Allostem 2004-2008:“The development of immunotherapeutic strategies to treat hematological and neoplastic diseases on the basis of optimised allogeneic stem cell transplantation”).
