Biography
Biography
Born in Brescia on 29 December 1964 and currently living in Milan.
Massimo Candiani is Head of the Complex Operative Unit of Gynaecology-Obstetrics and Reproductive Medicine at IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital since 1 November 2009.
Since 2009 he is full professor at the University Vita-Salute San Raffaele Faculty of Medicine and Director of the School of Specialty in Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the University.
Since 2018, he is the president of SEGI (Società di Endoscopia Ginecologica Italiana).
After graduating in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Milan, in 1993 he specialised in Gynaecology and Obstetrics with honours at the University of Pavia. His studies proceeded in France at the Polyclinique Gynécologie-Obstétrique et Médicine de la Reproduction, CHU Clermont Ferrand, Université de Clermont Ferrand and, on his return to Italy, he worked at the Gynecological Oncology Service of the Mangiagalli Clinic and at the European Institute of Oncology, carrying out care activities as Head of Gynecology at the Mangiagalli Clinic until 2005.
In 2004 he became associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Milan and in 2005 he joined the San Paolo Hospital in Milan, first as Head of the Operative Unit of Endoscopy Surgery and of the Service of Gynaecological Surgery, then as Director of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Clinic itself.
In 2007 he became head of the Operative Unit of Gynaecology and Obstetrics at the San Giuseppe Hospital in the Milan State University complex.
The constant application and progressive development of endoscopic techniques since 1991, have allowed Professor Candiani first to approach the surgical treatment of benign gynaecological diseases (surgery of the adnexa and uterus, endometriosic disease, pelvic static pathology, surgery during pregnancy and utero-vaginal malformations) and later, the introduction of endoscopic techniques in gynaecological oncology for staging and/or radical interventions.
Recently, Professor Candiani has turned his interests to a new chapter in the field of surgery, concerning both the correction of fetal spina bifida through intrauterine surgery and the evaluation, diagnosis and surgical treatment of malformations of the female genital tract.
The development and further application of vaginal surgery techniques completes his wide and exhaustive specialised surgical experience.
Professor Candiani is also a member of numerous national and international scientific societies: American Fertility Society; American Association of Gynecological Laparoscopists; European Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy, Italian Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, honorary member of the Societad Ecuadoriana de Endoscopia Ginecologica filial de la Societad Iberoamericana de Endoscopia Ginecologica. He has been a member of the board of SIELG (Italian Society of Endoscopy and Laser Therapy in Gynaecology), of the Board of Directors of the University Centre for Experimental Fetal Surgery of the University of Milan, of the Executive Board of the European Society for Gynaecologic Endoscopy (ESGE). He is a counselor of the "LANG - PARDI ITALIA Foundation" and President of the "Fondazione Donna e Feto”.
He has also been a member of the CSS (Consiglio Superiore di Sanità) of the Italian Ministry of Health.
From 2015 to 2018 he has been vice-president of SEGI (Società di Endoscopia Ginecologica Italiana), which he currently chairs.
Professor Candiani is also author of more than 300 printed publications in prestigious national and international scientific journals, chapters, textbooks and specialistic manuals.
