Biography

Alfredo Gatto is Associate Professor of History of Philosophy in the Faculty of Philosophy of Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, where he obtained his Ph.D. in Philosophy and Cognitive Sciences with a dissertation devoted to René Descartes and the genealogy of modern philosophy. During his doctoral studies, he was a visiting fellow at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra (FLUC).

He subsequently carried out post-doctoral research (2014–2015) at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Institut Catholique de Toulouse (ICT) and worked as a researcher (2016–2018) at the University of São Paulo (USP).

Teaching and Academic Activity:

He currently teaches History of Philosophy, History of Early Modern Philosophy, and History of Ideas and Philosophy of Culture at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University.
Between 2014 and 2018, he offered several university courses and seminars at the University of São Paulo (USP), the Faculdade de São Bento (FSB) in São Paulo, the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU), and the Institut Catholique de Toulouse (ICT).

Research interests:

His research focuses on the following areas:

1. Early Modern Philosophy, with a specific focus on Descartes, Leibniz, and Spinoza

2. History of Ideas, with particular attention to the concepts of truth and reality and to their interrelation with the narrative and symbolic forms that shape cultural paradigms

3. The apocalyptic tradition in the history of thought, beginning with the figure of Joachim of Fiore
