Biography

Flavio Piccoli is a Tenure-Track Researcher (RTT) in Computer Science at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University. His research focuses on artificial intelligence, with particular expertise in computer vision, deep learning, image processing, and multimodal data analysis, applied across a wide range of scientific and industrial domains.

He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Milano-Bicocca, supported by an industrial doctoral scholarship funded by Pirelli. His doctoral research focused on developing artificial intelligence methodologies for automatic anomaly detection and industrial quality inspection. Before joining Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, he held a Fixed-Term Researcher (RTDa) position at the University of Milano-Bicocca and conducted research at the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) and STMicroelectronics.

Throughout his career, he has established scientific and technology transfer collaborations with industrial partners such as Pirelli, Huawei, and Canon, as well as with international research institutions, including the Computer Vision Center at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, where he was a Visiting Researcher, and the University of Granada, where he conducted research and advanced teaching activities.

His main research interests include the development of machine learning and deep learning methodologies for the automatic analysis and interpretation of images, signals, and multimodal data. His research has addressed several application domains, including visual anomaly detection, automated industrial quality inspection, image enhancement and personalization, remote sensing, and geospatial AI. Particular emphasis is placed on multisource data integration, computational efficiency, and the development of robust methodologies that can be effectively deployed in real-world environments.

More recently, within the PNRR-funded ONFOODS project, he has focused on artificial intelligence for food analysis and digital nutrition, developing algorithms and integrated hardware-software systems for automatic food recognition, nutritional property estimation, and food waste quantification. His work has combined methodological research, advanced algorithm development, and technology transfer, contributing to scientific results published internationally and the development of intelligent systems tested in real-world operational environments. He has participated in numerous competitively funded research projects, also serving in scientific leadership roles and as Principal Investigator.

He has authored scientific publications in leading international journals, including IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, Computers in Industry, Expert Systems with Applications, Scientific Data, and Neural Computing and Applications, as well as contributions to international scientific conferences. He serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics, Journal of Electronic Imaging, and Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence, and regularly acts as a reviewer for several international scientific journals. He has also been invited to speak at national and international conferences, workshops, and scientific seminars, and has contributed to the scientific organization of international workshops.

He has extensive experience in university teaching, having held teaching positions in master's degree and doctoral programs, including international educational initiatives such as the Erasmus+ Joint Master's Degree program at the University of Granada. He has also supervised bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. students, contributing to advanced education and the development of interdisciplinary research projects.
