He was born on April 13th 1958 in Genoa.

He earned his degree in Milan University in 1983 on November 10th .

Specialist in Anesthesia and Intensive Care in 1986 on July 8th .

Clinical activity at San Raffaele Hospital, Milan since 1986.

Assistant Professor of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care at Vita-Salute University of Milan since 2001.

Attended the following international centres: Queen Charlotte Hospital, London; Hospital de la Santa Creu I Sant Pau, Barcelona; Monaco Cardiothoracic Center.

Honors and Positions

Author of more than 500 papers in indexed international journals (Hindex 62)  including randomized trials in NEJM, JAMA, Circulation and British Medical Journal and 41 books or books chapters. Cited >18,000 times in journals.

Visiting Professor, Universidad CES, Medellín, Colombia, 2016-2017.

Participated, often  as principal investigator, to 48 randomized controlled trials.

He was Chairman of Ministry of Health Committee for the Influenza Pandemia, Vice-Chairman of the National Research Committee (CNR), member of the Sport and Health Committee and member of the Joint Committee for Conjoined Programming of the Ministries of Health and Education.

Member of the Lombardia Government Health Development Committee.

Editor in chief of the Pubmed indexed Journal “Heart, Lung and Vessels”, 2009-2015, and evaluator for international donors including the Swiss National Science Foundation.

He won 8 research grants in the field of critical care, advanced heart support and anesthesiology fields.

Decorated with the title of Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic by President of the Republic Azeglio Ciampi, June 2nd, 2004.

Advanced circulatory and ventilatory support (ECMO, VAD, artificial heart); Treatment of advanced cardiac failure: Cardiac and renal protection in the critically ill; Cardiac and renal biomarkers; Non-invasive ventilation; Intra and extra Hospital emergencies; Meta-analyses in cardiovascular and perioperative medicine.
