Biography

He is vice Rector for humanities and social sciences.
He wase dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, where he teaches Moral Philosophy, Philosophy of History and The Western Tradition: Moral and Political Values. He initially carried out research and teaching activities in bioethics, later extending his areas of interest to the fundamentals of ethics, Kantian ethics and, more recently, to the critique of postmodernism, utopian thought and critical theory. Also in the field of practical philosophy, he has carried out researches of philosophy of cinema and management philosophy.

He is co-editor of the journal Moral Philosophy / Moral Philosophy founded by the Italian Society of Moral Philosophy

Education

PhD in bioethics,  obtained at the University of Genoa on February 26, 2002, with a thesis entitled Moral theories  and bioethics (tutor: Prof. Luisella Battaglia).

Scholarship and research in Bioethics at the H San Raffaele Scientific Institute, Department of Medicine and Human Sciences (coordinator Prof. Paolo Cattorini), starting from January 1, 1990 and until May 31, 199

University Course in Bioethics,  University of Milan, academic year 1990-91.

Annual Basic Course in Philosophy of Medicine, Medical Ethics and Bioethics at the H San Raffaele Scientific Institute, academic year 1989-90.

Degree in Philosophy at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Milan, on July 4, 1989, with a thesis on The philosophy of technology in contemporary American historiography  (speaker Prof. Francesco Botturi), reporting the vote of 110 and honors on 110.

Professional Experience and activities

From July 1, 2013  he is Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy of the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University (confirmed for a second term from July 2016 to July 2019; confirmed for the third term on June 26, 2019).

Since November 1, 2013 he  is  Full Professor (1st band) of Moral Philosophy (sector M-FIL/03 – Moral Philosophy)  at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, Milan. His courses are Moral  Philosophy  (bachelor's degree), Philosophy of History  (Master's Degree) and Moral and Political Values: The Western Tradition in the Master's Degree in Politics, Philosophy and Public Affairs,  joint degree provided by Unisr and University of Milan.  

From the academic year 2015-16 he is adjunct professor of Philosophy of Engineering and Science at the School of Industrial Engineering of the LIUC  - Castellanza University. The course, on the teacher's proposal, has changed its name to Philosophy of Management starting from the 2017-2018 a.y.

Major Fields of Interest

His area of research and teaching is practical philosophy widely understood (theoretical ethics, practical ethics, politics). His current research interests mainly concern the foundations of ethics, Kantian ethics, utopian thought, and critical theory

Since January 2017  he has been founder and Director of the International Research Centre for European Culture and Politics (IRCECP) at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University.

Since June 2021 he  is co-director of the magazine Moral Philosophy / Moral Philosophy promoted by the Italian Society of Moral Philosophy

Professional Honors

Since 2016 he has been a member of the  Board of the Italian Society of Moral Philosophy (SIFM), elected for two terms

From February 2016 to 2019 he was a member of the Cnr Commission for Research Ethics and Bioethics
