His research focuses on themes of applied pathology, approached in close collaboration with the clinicians, backed by appropriate epidemiological support, not neglecting the traditional diagnostic framework as the basis of a modern gauged characterisation of pathological settings. Clinical and research activities have approached the national cooperation for the active  surveillance  protocols in low risk prostatic carcinoma, the functional validation of microRna in prostatic carcinoma , valutations of predictive markers  of response to the chemotherapy and immunotherapy in urogenital tumors.  Over 20000 surgical specimens of urologic tumours signed-out, most related to prostate and testicular pathology with focus on rare testicular neoplasms. Professor Colecchia has carried out training at various institutions in Italy and abroad (including Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, United Kingdom, the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, USA, Champalimaud Clinical Center, Lisbon, Portugal).
