Biography

Prof Giovanni Landoni, MD, is currently Full Professor and Residency Program Director of Anesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, Milan. He’s also Director of the Center for Intensive Care and Anesthesiology of San Raffaele Hospital in Milan. In the period 2006-2024 he participated to ideation, writing and implementation of 35 grants that got funding from national and international donors and attracted 15 further trials supported by grants from abroad.

He served as reviewer for over 50 journals (NEJM, JAMA, and The Lancet among others) and for foreign grant agencies, and he is member of the Editorial Board of several international journals.

He was member of the Technical Scientific Committee (CTS) of AIFA, the Italian Food and Drug Administration (2009-2012)

He was (2012-2017) the Italian member of the Representative Council of EACTA (European Association of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiologists) and (2007-2011) Vice-President of ITACTA (Italian Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiologists).

His strong clinical and research interests in intensive care and anesthesia resulted in more than 700 scientific publications in indexed journals, cited >20,000 times, HI=76 on Scopus, including randomized trials on NEJM, Lancet, and JAMA, and over 100 invitations in international congresses in 29 countries. He participated to 64 randomized controlled trials. Prof Landoni was Chief Investigator in successfully completed multicenter randomized clinical trials that randomized > 10,000 critically ill or perioperative patients over the last 10 years.

He has strong interest in Emergency Medicine and was member of the ECMO team of San Raffaele Scientific Institute (2009-2012). He worked as a Rescue Helicopter Doctor in 2006/2007 and for Europ Assistance (2006/2008) for care and transport of critically ill expatriates.

He spent three years abroad performing research and working in the U.S.A., Spain, the Netherlands, India (where he married) and Uganda.

He has been working in non-for-profit organizations such as “Project for People” since 1993.

He is a member of MENSA Italia since 2001. He won numerous prizes in national and international congresses. He is member of ESICM, ESAIC, EACTAIC and SIAARTI.

He filed applications for 6 patents in the field.
