Biography

Stefano Olmi is Associate Professor of General Surgery at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan. He serves as Director of the Complex Unit of General and Oncological Surgery, the Center for Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery, and the Center of Excellence for Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery at Policlinico San Marco in Zingonia (Bergamo).

Since 2021, his surgical unit has been accredited as a Center of Excellence by the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery (EAES), one of the most prestigious European scientific societies in laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery. The accreditation covers laparoscopic surgery of the stomach (benign and malignant diseases), colorectal surgery (benign and malignant diseases), bariatric surgery, and abdominal wall surgery (hernias and incisional hernias).

The Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Center has also been recognized as a Center of Excellence by SICOB (Italian Society for Obesity Surgery and Metabolic Disorders) for more than ten years. Prof. Olmi is an active member of the Society.

Prof. Olmi has made significant contributions to the development and refinement of several surgical techniques, particularly promoting the adoption of minimally invasive surgery in general, oncological, and emergency surgery.

As primary surgeon, he has performed more than 10,000 surgical procedures. His clinical practice includes open, laparoscopic, and robotic surgery, with particular expertise in:

  • Oncological surgery (stomach, colorectal, pancreatic, splenic, and adrenal diseases)
  • Functional esophageal disorders (gastroesophageal reflux disease, achalasia, and hiatal hernia)
  • Bariatric and metabolic surgery
  • Abdominal wall surgery (hernias, incisional hernias, and diastasis recti)
  • Emergency surgery

His research activities focus on:

  • Tumor immunology
  • Biomaterials and biotechnology, including experimental studies on surgical adhesives as prosthetic fixation systems
  • The use of magnetic devices for gastro-intestinal and colorectal anastomoses (together with Prof. Michel Gagner, he performed the world's first laparoscopic colon resections with magnetic anastomosis)
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease in patients with obesity (he developed the sleeve gastrectomy technique combined with a 360° anti-reflux fundoplication)

Prof. Olmi is the author of more than 200 publications in indexed scientific journals (ORCID/Author ID: 0000-0002-8307-3402; H-index: 33).
