Biography
Professor Andrea Vignali is the Head of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Unit within the Department of Colorectal Surgery at the IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital. He is also an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University.
Education and International Fellowships
Born in Brescia on May 19, 1964.
- Degree and Specialization: Degree in Medicine and Surgery (110/110 cum laude; 1989); Specialization in Emergency Surgery (70/70 cum laude; 1994) at the University of Milan.
- Cleveland Clinic Foundation (USA): Research Fellow (1994-1996) at the Department of Colorectal Surgery.
- Hôpital Arnau de Vilanova (Spain): Training and research period in colorectal surgery (1990).
- San Raffaele Institute: Research Fellow in the "Pancreatic Islet Transplantation" laboratory (1991-1993).
Research and Areas of Interest
Inflammatory bowel diseases, oncological colorectal surgery, and perioperative rehabilitation protocols (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery - ERAS) aimed at reducing hospital stays and surgical complications. Investigator in numerous national and international trials on the minimally invasive approach to colorectal pathologies. Member of the "International Rectal Cancer Study Group," with which he co-authored algorithms and guidelines for managing issues related to rectal cancer surgery. Member of the Onco-Team sponsored by the "Italian Society of Surgical Oncology" (SICO), aiming to draft guidelines and promote multicenter scientific studies on colorectal neoplastic pathology. He has served and currently serves as PI or Co-PI for numerous national and international studies in the field of IBD and ERAS protocols. Peer reviewer for major international scientific journals and member of leading scientific societies in colorectal surgery. His bibliographic production includes over 370 scientific publications, including 12 book chapters. His current H-Index is 48 (Scopus source).
Awards and Honors
- Best Paper Awards (ASCRS): Awarded twice by the American Society of Colorectal Surgeons (Chicago 1998, New Orleans 2002) for the best global scientific papers on colorectal cancer.
- Karl Storz EAES Award (2009): Awarded by the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery for the best oral presentation.
- The Southern California Society Award: Received for the best scientific contribution.
- Institutional research awards and grants, including funding from the Surgical Infection Society, the Zeneca Foundation, and the CNR-NATO scholarship.
