World University Rankings 2025

The results of the prestigious THE World University Rankings, one of the largest and most diversified university rankings, have been published. Also this year UniSR excels by ranking 201-250 out of 2,092 universities, including 185 new entrants, and earning the 4th place for research quality worldwide.

A significant improvement in all indicators considered, with an excellent evaluation especially for research, an area in which UniSR touches the highest peak of 99.00 points in total, distancing itself significantly from the average results achieved by other universities and attesting its leadership.

You can consult the ranking at this link.

Excellent ranking in all areas

UniSR achieves the top score (between 98.4 and 99.7) in all indicators of research quality, which in the ranking holds the greatest weight in the weighting of data (30%), namely citation impact, research excellence, research strength and research influence.

This is an outstanding achievement considering for example that to calculate citation impact, by capturing the average number of times a university's published work is cited by scholars around the world, this year the bibliometric data provider Elsevier provided more than 157 million citations related to 18 million journal articles, article reviews, conference proceedings, books and book chapters published in the past five years.

The data includes more than 30,000 active peer-reviewed journals indexed in Elsevier's Scopus database and all publications indexed between 2019 and 2023.

Professor Enrico Gherlone, Rector of UniSR said:

We are proud of UniSR's extraordinary achievement in THE, particularly in research. The score of 99.6 in citations, significant in how much our research is shared in the global academic community, tells of how our university contributes to the human knowledge complex. The research strength metric, which calculates the 75th percentile of the field-weighted citation impact, also confirms the strength of our institution.

Professor Enrico Gherlone, Rector of UniSR continued:

The excellence of research, where we can boast a score of 99.7, examines the number of research publications in the top 10% by impact, worldwide, of citations, weighted according to field of study. It definitively elects our university as the leading research center at a global level. The recognition of the influence of our research, finally, identifies our university as one of the most influential in the world. The Times Higher Education Ranking places an authoritative seal on UniSR, as an institution dedicated to quality research, excellence in teaching, which is inextricably linked to it and ultimately to the progress of knowledge-based society.

It is also noted that in the areas of teaching, research environment and industry, the university ranks above the average results achieved by other classified institutions. Also in international outlook the result is aligned with the average data recorded by the other universities. Moreover, within the teaching pillar, the university achieves excellence in the field of PhDs, with the maximum score of 100,00.

The methodology

THE World University Rankings represents one of the most important and recognized rankings in the world. The performance indicators on which it is based are carefully calibrated and measure the performance of an institution across five areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry and international outlook.

This ranking, like other national and international ones such as Almalaurea, QS, Censis, not only aims to describe the situation of the academic system worldwide but represents also a valid support in choosing the university path to take for thousands of students.
