Biography
From august 2022 he has been dean of the Faculty of Philosophy
Education
Degree in Philosophy, Catholic University, Milan, Advance Course in Bioethics, University of Milan, Ph.D. in Bioethics at the University of Genoa.
From 1990 to 1992 he received a scholarship from the Dipartimento di Medicina e Scienze Umane, Scientific Institute Ospedale San Raffaele, Milan.
Teaching activity
From 1990 to 1997 teacher and coordinator of the Advance Course in Bioethics University of Milan.
From 1996 to 2000 assistant lecturer in Philosophy of science and History of contemporary philosophy at the Faculty of Psychology, Vita-Salute San Raffaele University. From 1999 to 2003 he taught Philosophy of science, History of contemporary philosophy and Epistemology at the Faculty of Psychology.
From 2002 to 2018 he taught Bioethics at the Faculty of Medicine, Vita-Salute San Raffaele University and from 2011 to 2021 also at the International MD Program of the same Faculty. He has also been invited professor at the University of Bergamo, at the MD Program of the Humanitas University Medical School, Milan and at the Theoogical Faculty of Northern Italy at Milan.
Academic appointments
From 2004 associate professor and from 2015 full professor of moral philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy, Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, where he teaches Ethics of Life and Ethical Theory.
From 2016 to 2022 coordinator of the Ph.D. Program in Philosophy at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University. From 2016 to 2022 co-director of CeSEP, Centre for Studies in Ethics and Politics. From 2002 to 2021 he was a member of the Ethics Committee of the Scientific Institute San Raffaele, Milan.
From 2022 he is the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy.
Participation in national and international research groups
From 1998 to 2000 local manager of the research unit of the Scientific Institute San Raffaele in the project on Solidarity and Care in the European Union, sponsored by the European Union within the BIOMED-2 Program, coordinated by the Institute for Bioethics, University of Limburg, Maastricht.
From 2000 to 2002 member of the working group at the Istituto Zooprofilattico delle Venezie in Padua for the research IZS.VE.237/99 sponsored by the Ministry of Health on Bioethical reflections on the potentialities of animal use in experimentation: Cloning, transgenic animals, and xenotransplantation.
From 2005 to 2007 local manager of the research unit of the Scientific Institute San Raffaele in the project on Enhancing Human Capacities, sponsored by the European Union within the VI Framework Program (FP6-Society), coordinated by the University of Bristol.
Member of the research unit of Vita-Salute San Raffaele University for the project FIRB 2006: Bioethics in genetics: moral and legal issues in clinical, biomedical and social use of human genetics, coordinated by Vita-Salute San Raffaele University.
Member of the research unit of Vita-Salute San Raffaele University for the project PRIN 2008: Recognition, respect, and motivation. A research on the theoretical and practical bases of cooperative action, coordinated by the University of Pavia.
Member of the research unit of Vita-Salute San Raffaele University for the project Civic values and intercultural cohabitation, sponsored by the Municipality of Milan, 2008-2009.
Member of the research unit of Vita-Salute San Raffaele University for the project PRIN 2010-2011: Realism and objectivity, coordinated by the University of Basilicata.
Local manager of the research unity of Vita-Salute San Raffaele University for the project PRIN 2017: New Challenges for Applied Ethics, coordinated by the University of Rome III.
From 2017 to 2020 member of the research unit of Vita-Salute San Raffaele University for the project Enhancing Social Innovation in Elderly Care: values, practices and policies, sponsored by Fondazione Cariplo and coordinated by the University of Milan.
Research interests
Contemporary ethics, with special reference to neo-Kantian theories and the debate between deontological and consequentialist theories.
History of ethics, with special reference to the utilitarian tradition and the history of notion of conscience. He has written papers on Kant, Sidgwick, Hume, Smith, Price, Mill, and Moore.
Bioethics, with special reference to issues at the beginning and the end of life, the ethical issues of neuroscience and conscientious objection.
Neuroethics and moral psychology, with special reference to cognitive and moral enhancement, and to the impact of cognitive science on theoretical conceptions of moral judgment.
