Prof. Paolo Ghia, UniSR Full Professor of Medical Oncology, Director of the Strategic Research Program on Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (Division of Experimental Oncology, IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele) and Head of the Research Unit on B Cell Neoplasia (Division of Experimental Oncology, IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele) has been recognized as World Expert of Leukemia according to the prestigious Expertscape tool. The researcher is in the top 0.1% of experts who study leukemia, certifying him among the most authoritative researchers in the world in this field.

Noteworthy is the specific ranking relating to chronic lymphatic leukemia, the disease of interest of the Strategic Program on chronic lymphatic leukemia at the San Raffaele Hospital: in this ranking Prof. Ghia is #1 at Italian level, #3 at European level, #8 worldwide. In the Italian ranking, also Dr. Lydia Scarfò, UniSR researcher, appears in eighth position, underlining the importance of the research group led by Prof. Ghia. Dr. Scarfò received the title of "Expert" being in the "top 1% of scholars writing about B-Cell Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia over the past 10 years".

Expertscape is a tool that classifies people and institutions based on the scientific publications of over 26,000 biomedical topics. The total impartiality of the rankings drawn up by this platform is guaranteed by rigorous and objective steps:

  • It searches the PubMed database to find all the medical journal articles published about the topic in the past ten years.
  • It assigns a score to each article, based on the article's year of publication (recent is better), the article's type (guidelines and reviews, for example, count more than letters to the editor), and the journal in which the article appeared (some journals are better than others).
  • It assigns a score to each author of the article (first author scores higher than second author).
  • It determines the institution, if possible, from which the article appeared.
  • It tallies the scores for all articles, authors, institutions, cities, regions, and countries, and then graphically outputs the results on web pages.

Prof. Ghia comments:

We appreciate the ranking drawn up by Expertscape because it highlights the quality work, both in research and in clinical activity, that the group of doctors, biologists and researchers that I have the honor to coordinate carry out daily in our Institute. Our approach starts from laboratory research to reach the bedside of patients, and it offers them the opportunity to access the most innovative therapies currently under development in the global scenario.

Dr. Scarfò concludes:

I believe that Expertscape's evaluation is an important recognition of the expertise of our group, which for years has been enthusiastically dedicated to improving the management of patients with chronic lymphatic leukemia by acting at different levels (preclinical research, clinical pharmacological protocols, educational activities). I also think that the presence in the ranking of my name (still "under 40") demonstrates the space and opportunities that are offered in UniSR to "young people", thanks to the presence and guidance of people of reference at an international level, in a context of growth and multidisciplinary discussion.
