Elected in San Diego (USA) during the 3rd Joint IPITA-IXA-CTRMS Congress, he will lead the International Pancreas and Islet Transplanation Association as president-elect until 2025 and as president in office until 2027.

Prof. Lorenzo Piemonti, Associate of Endocrinology UniSR and Director of the Diabetes Research Institute and of the Regenerative and Transplant Medicine Unit of the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan has been elected as the next president of the International Pancreas and Islet Transplanation Association (IPITA) during of the joint IPITA, IXA (International Xenotransplantation Association) and CTRMS (Cell Transplant and Regenerative Medicine Society) conference taking place from October 26-29th in San Diego (USA).

IPITA was established on 27 June 1993 in Amsterdam by a small group of visionary innovators in the field of cell therapy for diabetes. Today, it is the leading international scientific organization dedicated to advanced cell therapies for diabetes, with over 500 participating members from 38 different countries. Furthermore, it has become one of the ten official sections of The Transplantation Society, the international non-profit organization that deals with organ and tissue transplants and promotes scientific research, clinical practice, education and ethics in the sector of transplants, in official collaboration with the World Health Organization. With nearly 7,000 delegates from 105 countries, The Transplantation Society represents the world's leading scientific society in the field of transplantation.

“It is a huge emotion – explains Lorenzo Piemonti – and it will be an honor to serve the company for the next few years at a particularly exciting moment for cellular therapies for diabetes. I believe that, before a personal recognition, this is a recognition of the entire Milan school which has been continuously engaged in this line of research for more than 30 years. It is a very particular moment where we are witnessing a significant acceleration in clinical results, that makes us cautiously hope for a concrete future where we could perhaps do without insulin therapy. Witnessing this is already an extraordinary thing we've been given, and bearing the baton on behalf of so many colleagues from all over the world is a beautiful gift."

Also in San Diego, Italy also won the vote as the host of the nineteenth IPITA world congress which will be held in Pisa on June 15-18th 2025.

“This victory is the result of the collaboration of the entire Italian scientific community - emphasizes Piemonti - we have been united and have supported Pisa as a headquarters, precisely because it hosts a transplantology and diabetes school of international excellence, which represents a further source of pride for Italy in this area of research".
