What is GRAS?
The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) is one of the rankings introduced by ShanghaiRanking in 2017 to assess universities in approximately 100 countries across 57 disciplines in the fields of Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences, using nine indicators grouped into five categories: faculty quality, research output, research quality, research impact, and international collaboration.
A ranking based on objective data
The GRAS methodology is based exclusively on bibliometric data and indicators certified by third parties.
This approach makes it possible to independently assess the quality of faculty members and scientific output, providing an authoritative snapshot of the international research landscape.
The analyses are primarily based on the Web of Science and InCites databases, with minimum publication thresholds that vary across disciplines.
The indicators are organised into five areas—World-Class Faculty, World-Class Research Output, High-Quality Research, Research Impact, and International Collaboration—and combined into a final score that determines each university’s position for each subject.
Scientific excellence recognised worldwide
The GRAS results are part of a broader context of strong international recognition for Vita-Salute San Raffaele University.
In the THE World University Rankings 2026, the University achieves one of the highest research scores worldwide and ranks 7th globally for Research Quality, confirming a vocation for scientific excellence that spans disciplines, departments, and educational programmes.
Impact for the Scientific and Student Community
These recognitions highlight the daily work of faculty members, researchers, clinicians, and students, and help position the University as a key partner in international scientific collaborations and in the most advanced educational pathways.
At the heart of this commitment is each and every student, who at every stage of their academic journey experiences an environment of listening, dialogue, and personal growth—fully reflecting the spirit of “we’ve got each other’s back,” where every person is supported and valued.
