Research methodologies

The Centre for Patristic Studies favors an approach to the Fathers of the Church and, more generally, to the Christian views, which are strictly related to the philosophical thought of the late antiquity. To this end there are several viable research methodologies, converging and closelyconnected:

1. Philosophical-historical: overview of  the classical and Hellenistic philosophical notions and analysis of their development and rewording in late ancient Christian theology; this includes the analysis of the ancient Christian writers’ use of Greek philosophical lexicon and its consequent semantic redetermination;

2. Philological and literary: detailed and in-depth study of the ancient Christian world texts, with emphasis on linguistic, lexical, literal and rhetorical aspects of the assessed works;

3. Theological: research on the ancient Christian thought’s formation process and construction, with a particular emphasis on the issue of Incarnation;

4. Exegetical: study of the hermeneutical approach towards the Holy Scriptures and towards the Christian thought through the interpretation of the Bible by the ancient Christian writers.
