PhD UniSR
Scientific research at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University is highly articulated and structurally integrated with the research carried out at IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital, a hospital belonging to the San Donato Group and center recognized at a European and international level.
It is in this context that our Doctoral Courses offer excellent opportunities in various fields with the aim of providing students with the ability to face cutting-edge research by developing both technical skills and an intellectual approach.
UniSR PhD students also have the opportunity to expand their knowledge and experience at international level by achieving the double title by stipulating a Co-supervised PhD Thesis (Co-tutelle).
For the academic year 2024-2025, three PhD Courses are open at UniSR:
- PhD Course in Molecular Medicine
- PhD Course in Philosophy
- PhD Course in Cognitive and Behavioral Sciences
International PhD Course in Molecular Medicine
International PhD Course in Molecular Medicine is aimed at providing excellent guidance, support and training to graduates interested in understanding the molecular processes underlying human diseases and contributing to the development of new therapies.
The PhD program operates within IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele (OSR), enabling the students to undergo their practical training in the hospital facilities (both clinical departments and research laboratories) and undertake a major research project in one of the +100 OSR research laboratories.
PhD Course Coordinator: Prof. Carlo Tacchetti
The PhD Course is organized into five curricula that span the broader area of molecular medicine:
- Cellular and Molecular Biology
- Basic and Applied Immunology and Oncology
- Clinical and Experimental Medicine
- Neuroscience and Experimental Neurology
- Gene and Cell Therapy
The International PhD Course in Molecular Medicine offers also a program called “Physician-Scientist” that allows students of the final year of a UniSR Residency Program to attend simultaneously the 1st year of the PhD Course.
46 places are competed (details are available here) of which:
- 41 scholarships
- 5 positions without scholarship
The procedures for admission to the PhD Course in Molecular Medicine for the academic year 2024/2025 are open.
The deadline for candidates to submit their application to participate in the competition for admission to the PhD program is July 10th 2024 at 1 pm.
PhD Course in Philosophy
The Faculty of Philosophy of Vita-Salute San Raffaele University is traditionally committed to the development of original and ground-breaking philosophical investigation through lines of research that are constantly and fruitfully intertwined, though following different philosophical traditions and methodologies. The philosophical research stems from the research centers, which support and promote several activities in the areas of ethics and political philosophy, phenomenology, philosophy of mind and language, gender studies, metaphysics and aesthetics, history of ideas.
Some of these research lines, in particular philosophy of mind and language, decision theory and rationality theory, gender studies, phenomenology and ethics, are characterized by significant interdisciplinary interactions with scientific studies.
Thanks to the presence of five internal and one interuniversity research centers, thanks to the environment rich in stimuli and attentive to the intersections between philosophy and research in natural and social sciences, this year the winners of the call will also have the opportunity to receive an interdisciplinary preparation of excellence.
PhD Course Coordinator: Prof. Claudia Bianchi
The PhD Course consists of the following 4 research areas:
- Ethics and politics, reserach area devoted to analyzing the normative presuppositions of social and political practices in a mainly interdisciplinary perspective;
- History of ideas, history of philosophy, cultural history, area that purses two main directions of research: general issues in the methodology of history of ideas, culture and philosophy, and individual historical topics;
- Philosophy of language, logic and epistemology, research area that concerns science and its impact on society, language and communication, philosophy of mind and perception, logic and its applications;
- Theoretical Philosophy and Aesthetics.

PhD Course in Cognitive and Behavioural Sciences
The Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, ranked among the best Italian Universities for scientific research in the field of Neuroscience, offers a PhD Course in Cognitive and Behavioural Sciences aimed at the advanced training of graduates interested in understanding the neural processes underlying cognitive functions and behavior, both in normal conditions and in neurological and psychiatric diseases.
This program provides the possibility for doctoral students to work not only in close contact with sector experts, but also in cutting-edge laboratories and structures equipped with the most modern neurophysiological and neuro-imaging methods. It also makes use of synergies with international networks and the experience of teachers from foreign universities with high-level specialist training.
The PhD aims to recruit and train young master graduates from different educational paths (psychologists, but also biologists, biotechnologists, doctors and philosophers) in order to train professionals with a solid background of knowledge and skills.
PhD Course Coordinator: Prof. Luigi Ferini-Strambi
